The distinction that matters between free QR services is static versus dynamic codes. A dynamic code points at the provider's own domain, which then redirects to your destination, which is what lets them count scans and, on some plans, stop redirecting once a trial lapses. The codes here are static, meaning your destination is encoded directly into the pattern, so nothing sits between the scanner and you and the code keeps working as long as your destination does. That also removes a link from the trust chain, which matters given how the Federal Trade Commission describes scammers hiding harmful destinations inside QR codes.
Raise the error correction level before adding a logo, because the logo covers part of the pattern and the higher level is what allows a scanner to reconstruct what sits underneath it. Denso Wave, which invented the format, documents four error correction levels restoring roughly 7, 15, 25 and 30 percent of the codewords, with the 15 percent level the one most commonly chosen. Keep a strong difference between the foreground and background colors, and keep the quiet margin around the edge rather than cropping it tight. The W3C contrast guidance is a useful reference for judging whether two colors separate clearly enough. A QR code is a matrix barcode, meaning it stores data in two directions rather than the single row of stripes on a supermarket barcode. That is why it holds far more and still scans when partly damaged. It was developed by Denso Wave in Japan for tracking car parts, and the format is now published as the open standard ISO/IEC 18004, which is why any phone camera can read a code made by any generator.
Four uses dominate locally. Payments, where SGQR and PayNow put a single scannable code on the counter of almost every hawker stall and shop. Restaurant menus, which moved to QR during the pandemic and largely stayed. Product authentication and traceability, where a code on the packaging links to batch or origin information. Test before you print. Scan the code with an ordinary phone camera rather than a specialist app, because that is what your customers will use, and check it from the distance people will actually stand at. Then test the printed sample, not just the screen.
